I looked it up on wiki, and their were 150 candidates, 75 were accepted and only 33 survived past the augmentations.

This ISN'T a MMO will people just give it up that it is. Theres another halo game in devolpment maybe you'll get your precious MMO there!

 To answer the original post, in the first skirmishes, well most of them up til reach, often 30-40 spartans would be involved in every battle, theres loads of war stories in the book about it.

Okay, let's just end this at that there were many SPARTANS created along with Master Chief, many died in the process of augmentation and more died at the battle of Reach. Some could still, during MC's adventure, still be alive and active somewhere unknown.

We shouldn't start an unecessary debate on the number of SPARTANS.

A lot of FPS noobs are really starting to piss me off with their assumption that thi is an MMOFPS or it should be one. Seriously you should be made to read the extremely small FAQ as a part of the registration so we could skip all this.

 It's just funny that Halo being the giant franchise as it is, including a canon, books and tons of background information has just passed you by, especially since you seem to have played and liked the Halo series. It's reasonable to assume that if one has played Halo they should be aware about this stuff since it's so available... even in frikkin book stores.

Listen this is a prequel yes? it takes place at the first covenant battles yes? that means it is before m.c.'s time.  chief is part of the SPARTAN II program, and the precursor to that program is the Omega program, why do you think he says "spartan team omega" this was the spartan's first goings on here, this is the same project that sarge was in, the Omega project.

It pisses my off that people don't even know the basic storyline, high fives to those that do know the storyline.  I'm pretty sure that (petty) master chief is a real rank in the army.  correct me if im wrong.  Spartan 117 (jon) was the only spartan to be advanced to that rank (that i know of).  He was promoted because of his awsomeness.
