The night was unusually quiet. Never before has Marcus heard of such silence and peace. Even during the days of innocent youth, Marcus has always seen life as nothing but a challenge and a mission. But as he laid there on his standard military cot, he couldn’t help but feel relaxed as he laid his head on the pillow and had his arms crossed under his head, listening to nothing but the sounds of his fellow men sleeping in there bucks. Marcus had the bottom cot of his bunk. He shared his cot with an old friend, his name was James. Marcus had known James for most of his life. For as long as he could remember, James was always there by his side, helping him with every obstacle and just simply being a friend. Marcus saw James more like a brother. James always falls asleep fast, so Marcus never gets a chance to talk to him when its lights out in their barracks. Usually Marcus has no problem falling asleep, but for some reason this night just felt different. Marcus had the sense that something was going to happen the next day. Not a bad happening but simply something that would change his life forever. “Yeah, like that hasn’t already happened”, Marcus said. “This program that the UNSC has enlisted me in has already changed my life, I don’t know if they can throw me something that can surprise me as much as being here”, Marcus said as he laid in his bunk. “But then again, maybe they can”.
“Talking to yourself again Marcus?” James asked while he awoke from Marcus’s chatting. “You know it James” Marcus said. “What is it this time?” James said. “It’s just, for some reason, I can’t shake the feeling that something is going to happen tomorrow”, Marcus said. “What like, something bad?” James asked as he looked underneath his bunk to talk to Marcus. “No nothing like that, just something significant that will completely change my, or maybe our, lives”, Marcus said as he looked up at James. “Ha, you and your little senses, what could possible happen that could even affect us now?” James said. “Hey, shut the hell up you guys!” a booming voice said from the darkness of the other side of the barracks. “Some of us are trying to *** sleep here”, the voice said. “Yeah, good thing too, you need your beauty sleep!” James yelled back to the woken soldier. “Yeah yeah, you’re so *** hilarious!”, the voice said back. Then from the intercoms scattered around the barracks, the voice of their commander echoed through the walls. “You all better shut the *** up before I make you run laps around the base.” All three soldiers in unison said, “Sir yes sir!” Then the commander said, “Good, nice and early Spartans, it’s going to be a big day tomorrow”, the intercom shut off with a high pitch ring and the three soldiers laid back down in their cots.
Marcus still sat their thinking about what the commander had said. “Big day tomorrow huh?” Marcus said to himself. “Hey Marcus, using your psychic powers to predict what tomorrows dinner will be? I didn’t get to eat mine because of my *** team!” Said a voice coming from beside Marcus’s cot. It was Marcus’s other friend Ivan. Marcus met Ivan in the Spartan project, Ivan was really friendly towards everyone even in the darkest of moments. Even when we were all told that we weren’t going to see our families, Ivan was there cracking jokes like it was no big deal. Not everyone enjoyed his moment choices of comedy. But I took upon myself that Ivan was a nice guy, but I could defiantly trust him. “And whose fault is that Ivan?” Marcus said. “You’re the team leader, it’s your duty to make your team wins, if you want dinner you’re going to have to work a little harder.” Ivan replied with a smartass smile, “Ha, yeah well it’s my duty to eat some *** food!” Marcus and Ivan laughed and then laid back on their cots and fell silent for a couple of seconds. Then Ivan broke the silence and said, “Do you really think that something’s going to happen tomorrow? I mean, you know, that will change our lives? I overheard you talking to James.” Marcus sighed and said, “I don’t know Ivan, It just felt different today with our training, it seemed that it was harder for you, me and James and even other Spartans here.” James came into the conversation and said, “Yeah now that you say that, it was, and the commander kept paring us together in teams, he never does things like that. Plus he pared us with that huge weird guy, what’s his name…Zach.” Ivan Smiled and said, “Yeah that gorilla never talks to us and he always does his missions alone for some reason. Marcus looked at both Ivan and James and said, “Well, gorilla or not, he is part of the Spartan project and we as fellow soldiers need to treat him like he is a brother.” Ivan and James knew Marcus was serious so they both nodded to him.
Then all of a sudden the intercom turned on and the commander’s voice came as load as thunder. “Marcus, Ivan and James! I want complete silence you hear me! If you so much as *** make your cot creak, you will be outside and running laps! Do you understand me?!” Marcus, Ivan and James stood up from their cots and yelled in unison, “Yes sir! Sorry sir! The intercom shut off with the high pitch ring again and the three Spartans finally went to sleep. But Marcus still thought about tomorrow. The commanders voice was still repeating in his head, “Big day tomorrow Spartans”. Marcus sighed and turned to his side to fall asleep, but it just wasn’t the same as other nights. Marcus looked at his clothes that were laid on the end of his cot. “SPARTAN-019” was written on his shirt. He looked at Ivan’s clothes; “SPARTAN-089” was on his shirt. Then Marcus looked at James’s clothes, “SPARTAN-013” was on his. Marcus then laid his head back onto his pillow and as he fell asleep, he said, “What could possible happen?” Silence fell among the Barracks and Marcus, Ivan, James, and Zach, slept peacefully for the last time of their lives.
