Ok lets start out by saying that the SOF isnt exactly the smallest ship right? So how on earth would it really "last".  I mean how many covenant ships are sitting in orbit over Harvest, and what classes are they (carrier, cruiser etc.)?  So whats stopping them from going and blowing the crap out of the SOF?  Sure it can go in low orbit (maybe if its capable) for a little while but one of those times and elite or something will look up and say: "look at that huge dark shape in the sky.  It doesnt look like one of ours" and then ordering an attack.
Reffering to Sparhawk's thread questioning whether the SOF was the only ship there or if there were other ships at Harvest as well, the UNSC would have to have quite a few ships to combat the covenant in space.  I dont know if the SOF would have had any stealth systems implemented while it was being refitted.

You have a valid point.

The only reason it's not destroyed, could be that there are lots of other UNSC ships that accompany the SOF. Thus in the process of accompanying the SOF, are also protecting it from harm?

This is a difficult question.

Hhhhmmm... stealth systems on a ship that big, not likely lol.

well the SOF is a really big ship, about the size of one of the UNSC carriers, and there are probably other ships with the SOF, or the space around harvest was cleared out already.

It still wouldn't fool them if troops were being transported to the surface of Harvest, they'd know the troops would have to come from a ship via the orbit of Harvest. They are dumb... but not that dumb lol.

The safety in numbers thing seems to be the only real explanation so far and this has gotten me curious about what other ships will accompany to SOF.  Maybe we will get to see different variants that we havent actually seen in the games.  This leads to another thing involving the campaign's last mission, like we might get to see the SOF's "guards" fight..no wait..hold off the covenant ships while the SOF escapes.  Could lead to some cool cinematics and add more climax to the last mission.

they menson that battle gruop in the time line i dont think it was part of it

only time will tell what hapens
